“No one has ever successfully painted or photographed a redwood tree. The feeling they produce is not transferable. From them comes silence and awe. It’s not only their unbelievable stature, nor the color which seems to shift and vary under your eyes, no, they are not like any trees we know, they are ambassadors from another time.” —
John Steinbeck
Walking in the Redwood forest is like walking into another world, a magical world! Each step invites you to imagine the pristine world that allowed these trees to grow between 250-300 feet tall. The lush green leaves and plant life seemed to be whispering. I sat for hours looking and the light, the greens, and browns and imagining the entire California coast full of these giant trees.
I was struck by how many of the trees had burn marks in various places on the trunk, you can see the burn marks on the trucks of several of the trees pictured, yet they still grew to over 200 feet.
The redwoods tell this unique story of resilience; you can be burned and still thrive. Life is an endless opportunity to reinvent ourselves. The texture and patterns on the trees, roots, and moss have a supernatural feel that will find a place to grow in my work.
